The believers
I’ve been spending more time on Facebook lately—a platform I had all but abandoned for years. It’s where many of the people I know in real life still gather virtually. After the pandemic shattered my social life and disrupted opportunities to network in the film industry, I lost touch with many of them. (In other words, schmoozing came to a screeching halt.) And honestly, I had changed, too. My interest in that world had faded considerably.
But as things on X became increasingly politicized, leaving me frustrated and unhappy, I decided to dip back into Facebook to see, well…how the other half lives.
Most of the people I’ve known over the years lean left to varying degrees—some center-left, others further left, to the point of mourning when companies scale back DEI initiatives. Just today, someone posted a list of “good guy” corporations, like Costco, for standing by DEI principles.
The general mood? Disturbed and disturbing.
