In a surprising announcement, Toyota has stated that it plans to move away from DEI and its support of pro-LGBTQ events, according to Bloomberg. They also will no longer participate in corporate culture surveys such as the rankings by the Human Rights Campaign.
The company sent out a memo to its US employees saying that it will “narrow community activities to align with STEM education and workforce readiness.” It stated that they “will work to ensure all company activities are aligned with our values and create an inclusive environment for our team members.” However, their focus, said the company, will be on their business practices and activities.
This is a significant move for the company because usually when corporations go “all in” on DEI or social justice issues, reversing out of them is incredibly difficult and unlikely. While the move might win over some customers, it’s also likely to alienate others, so it’s rather risky.
